The route to Greece

Night train to Munich

Your adventure will begin with a Nightjet trip from the Netherlands to Munich. The night train has been refurbished and you can sleep in the comfortable couchette and sleeping compartments. On this route you can also book the Mini Cabin, a private capsule with plenty of privacy. If you are travelling as a couple, you can also book two adjoining cabins connected by a sliding door.
The overnight train arrives in the morning. Remember to set your alarm early to catch the sunrise!

To Italy with Railjet

From Munich, take Railjet further south to Venice or Ancona. Railjet operates several routes. There is a direct train from Munich via Innsbruck to Bolzano, Rimini and Ancona. The train arrives in Ancona in the early evening. Just in time to enjoy a plate of pasta on a terrace in the evening sun.
There is also a Railjet that travels directly to Venice. You will also arrive there in the early evening.

You can also spend a few days in Italy. Visit the palaces in Venice or see the great cathedral of San Ciriaco in Ancona. Both cities are fascinating and well worth a visit before crossing over to Greece. Alternatively, you could leave the same evening and spend the night on the ferry.

The boat crossing

Corfu

Corfu is renowned for its lush green landscapes and historic sites. Highlights include the Old Fort with its panoramic views and the Achilleion Palace, a historic building with beautiful gardens.

The village of Paleokastritsa is popular for its monastery and clear waters, perfect for snorkelling.

Corfu is also a great base for day trips to the surrounding islands of Paxos and Ithaca.

Igoumenitsa

Igoumenitsa is less touristy but is the gateway to north-west Greece and the Ionian Islands. It is known for its tranquil beaches and as a transport hub with ferry services to the Ionian Islands. The coastal charm is perfect for those looking to escape the busier tourist spots.

Patras

Patras, Greece's third largest city, combines cultural heritage with modern facilities. The city is famous for the Rio-Antirrio Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, and its carnival. Sights such as the medieval castle and the Roman Odeon underline its rich history. Patras has a vibrant atmosphere with many shops, cafes and cultural activities. From Patras you can take a train to Athens.

Continuing into Greece

You can also travel further afield to cities such as Athens and Sparta, or relax on one of the many islands. From Patras you can take the train to various destinations.

Travel with the Interrail Global Pass

You can book single train tickets for this trip or travel with Interrail. For trains such as Nightjet and Railjet, you will still need to make a separate reservation or purchase an additional ticket. The same applies to ferry crossings. However, if you are travelling in high season, it is advisable to book well in advance if, for example, you want to book a cabin on the boat.
