Visit the Christmas market in Munich
Munich's internationally renowned Christmas market is the perfect place to soak up the Christmas spirit and do some Christmas shopping. You can stroll past more than 150 traditional wooden stalls and booths in Munich's photogenic city centre. Enjoy spicy drinks, thousands of brilliant lights and ambient music. Find out everything you need to know about the Munich Christmas market below.
Christkindlmarkt
The Christkindlmarkt in Munich is the most famous of the city's Christmas markets. A must-see is the huge Christmas tree full of lights that stands in the middle of the market. After dark, the whole market is thus beautifully lit up to become the most magical place in town. Choirs and brass bands provide live music, stalls display the most ornate baubles and steaming mulled wine is served in colourful mugs. Food stalls sell typical specialities such as gingerbread biscuits (Lebkuchenherzen) and roasted chestnuts (Maronibrater).
Other Christmas markets in Munich
Besides the Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz, around 20 other Christmas markets are organised in the city each year. These are often smaller and less well-known, but certainly no less fun. For example, visit the festive Tollwood Winter Festival on Theresienwiese. These beer tents, which also host the Oktoberfest are filled with nativity scenes and Christmas decorations at Christmas time. Musical performances and theatre shows are organised. Specifically for children, Munich hosts the Fairytale Christmas Market and the Märchen Bazar, where there are all kinds of fun activities.
Christmas shopping
Munich is also the perfect place for some Christmas shopping. Shopping is even more enjoyable in illuminated streets with Christmas-themed shop windows. Buy a new outfit for Christmas and collect the nicest gifts for under the tree. Have sore feet from all that shopping? Then settle down in one of the charming restaurants or cafés that are also in the Christmas spirit this time of year.
When is the Christmas market in Munich ?
The Münster Christmas market will be open from 25 November to 24 December 2024 (subject to change).
What else can you do?
A visit to Munich at Christmas is extra special. The city streets and the interiors of shops and hotels are magically decorated. There are many activities, including ice skating and torchlight processions. Proceeds from many of these activities are donated to local charities, so your visit also means you are doing something good for the locals. A special Christmas tram runs during this festive season, in which you will be treated to mulled wine, snacks and music during a ride through the city.
