Tips for a wintery weekend getaway to Munich
Faster and direct to Munich from 15 December
Good news! From 15 December, you can travel directly to Munich by train, reducing your travel time. You can now travel from Amsterdam to the heart of Munich in 6 hours and 55 minutes, and from Utrecht in just 6 hours and 22 minutes, all without the need to change trains. This means you’ll save over 30 minutes when travelling from Amsterdam or Utrecht! Train tickets to Munich are now available for journeys until 14 April 2025.
Asamkirche, baroque church
The Asamkirche is a must-see when strolling through Munich's old town. Built by the Asam brothers in the 18th century, this baroque church is an architectural masterpiece. Inside you will be overwhelmed by the rich decoration, from the detailed ceiling frescoes to the golden altars that catch the light. In the heart of the city, it's an ideal place for reflection.

Schloss Nymphenburg
Schloss Nymphenburg exudes a unique tranquillity in winter. The extensive gardens are perfect for a peaceful stroll, perhaps through the snow. Ice skaters and curling enthusiasts flock to the frozen canal. Inside you will find Bavarian splendour with paintings in the Beauty Gallery and a collection of carriages in the Marstall Museum. For a tropical break from the cold, visit the nearby Botanical Gardens.

Westpark, a green haven
Westpark is the perfect place for a relaxing winter stroll away from the hustle and bustle of the city. This 60-hectare park is a peaceful natural haven and a nice alternative to the busier English Garden. Visit the East Asian Ensemble. You will find a tranquil Chinese garden, a magnificent golden Buddha statue in the Thai Sala Pavilion and a stunning Nepalese pagoda handmade by three hundred Nepalese artisans.
Enchanting library
The Juristische Bibliothek is perfect for a quiet break. This library has a high hall, gilded spiral staircase and wooden bookcases. It is warm and cosy in winter. You can visit the library on a guided tour booked at the Tourist Office in the New Town Hall.

The Deutsches museum
The Deutsches Museum is the perfect place to escape the cold. It has the largest engineering collection in the world with more than 28,000 objects, including historic aircraft, robotics and interactive experiments. It has a lot to offer science enthusiasts and is great for families and children thanks to its interactive exhibits. You can find everything from electricity experiments to model ships.

Mary's Coffee Club
Located in the Amalienpassage, Mary's Coffee Club is a cafe with an international flair. The interior is inspired by San Francisco and Bali, with neon lights and coral-coloured chairs. It serves breakfast and brunch from early morning until 19.00 hrs, with dishes such as Mykonos waffles, oriental flatbreads and halloumi bowls. An ideal place for a stylish rest.

Kunstlabor 2
Kunstlabor 2 is a 15-minute walk from Munich's main railway station. Housed in an old health centre, this hidden gem offers sixty rooms transformed into art installations. Each room serves as a canvas for different creative expressions, from multimedia experiences to art with a message. Please note: Kunstlabor 2 is only open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Café Gans am Wasser
Café Gans am Wasser, loctated on the shores of Mollsee Lake in West Park, is the perfect place to end a winter walk. In winter there is a Kyrgyz yurt with a wood-burning stove and comfortable sofas. If you visit Munich in November or December, be sure to check out the Christmas markets. The city has more than 20 Christmas markets, each with its own unique atmosphere. Visit the traditional Marienplatz market, surrounded by historic buildings and twinkling lights. For a more medieval feel, head to the Wittelsbacher Platz Christmas market, with stalls full of arts and crafts. For a fairytale experience, head to the Fairytale Bazaar in Olympiapark. To Munich by train
Reach Munich city centre directly with the night train. Prefer to travel during the day? Then you can travel from Amsterdam Central Station and change trains only once to arrive in 7.28 hours with Intercity Berlin or ICE International.
The low single fare for day trains is € 38. By night train, a seat costs from € 35 for a one-way trip. For all trains, the earlier you book, the lower the price!
