Crowded ICE and Interrail

Opportunities for travel at the top of summer with Interrail/Eurail may be adjusted

International trains are popular. In 2022 NS and DB together have carried a record breaking number of passengers during the summer months. This has led to overcrowded trains and even to trains skipping regular train stops. As a result, passengers experienced an uncomfortable train journey. For the coming summer, NS and DB want to avoid similar unwanted situations and would like to ensure that the majority of travellers can travel comfortably.

We would prefer to immediately put more trains into service. That, however, is not a feasible option in the short run. Therefore, the carriers are exploring all options so that everyone who wants to travel on an international train can do so comfortably and safely.

Measures summer 2023

The busiest period is from mid-June to mid-August. Barring travellers with an Interrail/Eurail Pass from a number of ICE trains travelling to Germany is one of the options that is being investigated. This is by no means a final decision and we regret that a suggestion towards that end has been picked up as such on social media. We hope to be able to present a comprehensive list of measures for the summer of 2023 soon.
