The ‘Amsterdam’ crossed international borders
12 March 2025
In Germany, it is customary to name trains after important destinations.
This morning, the train was christened at Amsterdam Centraal by Melanie van der Horst, alderman for traffic, transport and air quality of the city of Amsterdam: "I wish you, the ICE train Amsterdam, your crew and your passengers many sustainable miles in Europe."
Anja Schöllmann, member of the board of Deutsche Bahn Fernverkehr, and Wouter Koolmees, president and CEO of NS, were also present.
The first destination of the "Amsterdam" is Munich, but in the future the train will be seen in more places in Germany and even in Belgium or France.
The new ICE trains were purchased by DB specifically to accommodate passenger growth and to replace aging ICE trains. In addition to Munich, the new ICE trains also run from the Netherlands to Cologne and Frankfurt.
In Germany, work is being done to improve the track. As a result, between April 17 and June 6, ICE trains from Amsterdam will not go through Stuttgart and thus not directly to Munich. From the Pentecost weekend on June 7, the ICE will again run directly between Amsterdam and Munich with a double train set (400 meters long, 878 seats and 16 bicycle places).
