General conditions

Tickets for international trains can be divided into 2 types: tickets for trains with and without compulsory reservation.

High-speed trains (such as TGV) and night trains usually require a reservation and the tickets are valid only on the train, date and class booked, unless otherwise specified in the fare conditions.

International tickets for trains without compulsory reservation (such as Intercity and all-station trains) are linked to a route, but not to a departure time or train, unless otherwise stated in the fare conditions. These international tickets are valid for a maximum of 1 day, the period of validity is indicated on the ticket.

Reserved seats

If you have reserved a seat, you are requested to take your seat within 15 minutes of boarding the train. If you fail to do so, the Train Manager may assign your spot to another passenger.

Homeprint ticket

A homeprint ticket is a digital ticket that must be printed on A4 paper before the journey starts. You will find a print button in the confirmation that you received per email. The following conditions apply to these tickets:

  • The group ticket is in the name of the group and registered in the name of the group leader which is non-transferable.
  • You must print out the homeprint ticket in A4 format before you begin your journey.
  • Specific homeprint rules can be found in the terms of use on the homeprint ticket.
  • Checks are made on, among other things, the basis of identification. Please bring a valid photo ID (passport or identity card) with you; the Train Manager/Conductor may ask you to show it.
  • Travel is only possible on the booked date and/or train booked, unless the fare conditions state otherwise.
  • Travelling with the group fare means that all members of the group must travel together in the same class for the entire journey.
  • Changes and cancellations are subject to the terms and conditions of the fare (see tables below). If you want to change the travel date, the new travel date must fall within the carrier's booking period.
  • Due to pending verification data, if a refund is requested within 2 or 7 days after the ticket's effective date or the train's departure time, the refund will be made via the original payment method after these 2 or 7 days. This period is different for each carrier.

Refunding of unused tickets

If you have bought a ticket and are suddenly unable to travel, you can get a refund from your original point of sale under certain conditions. You can check which conditions apply to you in the tables further down this page.

Refunding of partially unused tickets

A request for partial refund can be submitted up to 2 months after the starting date. This does not apply to the homeprint ticket. Other tickets can be sent to NS International Customer Service, Postbus 2552, 3500 GN Utrecht. The ticket must be authenticated by authorised railway staff or provided with documentary evidence, such as proof of other transport. Minimum cost is €15 per ticket.

Travel insurance

It is always wise to obtain travel insurance from your insurance company. It offers more security in case of necessary medical assistance, accident or lost luggage.

Holiday cancellation insurance

High cancellation fees are associated with certain types of fares. It is, therefore, advisable to obtain cancellation insurance from your insurer.

Luggage

The options for taking luggage vary from train to train. It is compulsory to label luggage on the train with your first and last name. Read more information about carrying luggage.

Compensation for delays

In case of delay of an international train, compensation is possible under certain conditions:

  1. There is a (partially) cross-border route.
  2. The compensation is calculated on the price of the single ticket, including surcharges, but excluding booking fees or transaction charges and is usually paid into a bank account.
  3. Applications are submitted to the railway operator where your ticket was purchased or to one of the carriers involved in your international journey, up to 3 months after your journey, upon presentation of your original ticket.

Transport agreement

The general and specific terms and conditions of the carrier(s) concerned shall apply to the transport agreement(s) between the passenger and the carrier(s). Several carriers may be party to the agreement(s) referred to in the previous sentence and your journey may comprise several separate transport agreements, even if only one ticket is used. We refer you to NSInternational.nl/conditions or to the points of sale. The conditions will be sent to you free of charge upon request.

Transport agreements concluded with the carriers NS Internationaal BV, HSA Beheer NV (which use the NS International brand name) only concern transport with high-speed or cross-border trains. In the event of a transfer, an agreement with another carrier may therefore come into effect. The transport agreements referred to in the previous sentence are governed by: the EU Passenger Rights Regulation, the NS International General Terms and Conditions, the applicable Train Type Conditions and the specific Rate Terms and Conditions.
